Steering Racks

The part that connects your hands to the road. No compromise on this one.

A steering rack rarely fails all at once: it weeps, it stiffens when cold, it knocks at full lock. Three warnings, three months of notice before the failure.

The symptoms, and what hides behind them

A symptom points somewhere, it proves nothing. Here is what we see most often on this family, and the cheaper causes worth ruling out first.

    Worth knowing

    This family in particular

Why do you refuse to sell used parts in this product family?

Because this is the part that connects your hands to the road. A used steering rack comes with no test bench report: nobody knows how many kilometres the internal bearing surface has covered, nor what state the seals are in. We only sell tested remanufactured units, with a printed report. It costs more, and it is the only defensible choice.

Is wheel alignment after fitting essential?

Yes, without exception. Toe depends directly on how the track rod ends are set, and removing the rack always changes that. A new steering rack with the alignment left wrong destroys a set of tyres in 5,000 km and makes the car unstable. Budget for it from the start.

It is leaking a little. Can it wait?

Weeping is not an immediate emergency, but it is a countdown: a seal that weeps will eventually give way, and the loss of assistance arrives without warning. Check the level every week. If you have to top up more than once a month, stop driving long distances.

Electric or hydraulic assistance: how do I tell?

If there is a fluid reservoir and a belt driving a pump, it is hydraulic. If there is no reservoir and no pump, but a large connector on the column or on the steering rack, it is electric. The two do not take the same part.
